抄録: The United States suffers political and social polarization at its worst since the Civil War. Is Trump the "result" or the "cause" that accelerated this malaise? As a former Washington correspondent who covered the Trump administration last four years, I tried exploring answers for this American self-questioning. Trump-style governance, so-called Trumpism, has been characterized with its unique communication style to inspire anti-elite ressentiment among American public especially for white male middle-class who feel themselves less and less belongings to mainstream in their country. This communication sometimes takes the form of “dog whistle” aiming at Trump’s core supporters or at other times takes the form of sense of complicity sharing misinformation intentionally. The anti-elite undercurrent and the partisan confrontation which accelerates political polarization have been fostered in the US even since before the rise of Trump. In this respect the Trumpism can be called the “result”. On the other hand, it is also pointed out that Trump would be the “cause” which overturned the hierarchical order of policymakers, bureaucrats, experts and major media institutions playing himself destroying the existing order. In addition, the Covid-19 pandemic played a major role in amplifying its effects. This reminds us of importance of further exploration to find out how infectious disease has caused significant impact on the state of democracy.2021-11-30T15:00:00Z米中デカップリングの虚実

抄録: As the tension between the US and China rises to the level of a new Cold War, some observers say that moves are afoot to "decouple" the economic ties between the two countries. Some politicians and policymakers say Japanese companies should follow this movement. Japan has maintained an alliance with the US, but its economy is closely tied to China. Unlike American corporations, Japanese companies have built their supply chains across Asia, predominantly in China and Southeast Asia. Decoupling from China in lockstep with the US would deeply hurt the Japanese economy. Besides, truth be told, the US's decoupling maneuvers have so far been selective and limited to the military and high-tech spheres in reality; China and the US still remain each other's biggest trading partner. Japan needs to read the reality behind the rhetoric of US-China decoupling carefully and chart its own course in economic policies while ensuring that they are compatible with its national security strategy. Doing so should also further cement Japan's relationship with Southeast Asia, a region where a large chunk of Japan's supply chains operates, and where countries are careful to avoid taking sides between the US and China.2021-11-30T15:00:00Z新型コロナウイルス禍が中国共産党政権に与えた政治的影響

抄録: The outbreak of the Covid-19 infection explosion that began in Wuhan, China, drew severe criticism over the authorities' delay in initial response and information concealment, and shook the Chinese Communist Party regime. On the other hand, the government succeeded in stopping the spread of the infection through strict measures and quickly started the economic recovery. As other countries suffer from the pandemic, the sense of superiority that Chinesestyle governance is working well is higher than ever. The Covid-19 crisis was a unique opportunity to show the weaknesses and strengths of the communist regime to the fullest. I will analyze the political impact of the Covid-19 crisis on the Communist regime based on my experience as the Chief of the China Bureau since the beginning of the infection explosion.2021-11-30T15:00:00Zポピュリズムを考える

抄録: Since the Brexit referendum and the election of Donald Trump in 2016, the term “populism” has become popular and widespread. However, it is difficult to say that there is a common understanding of what populism is. Based on recent research findings in political science, this paper discusses the following issues: the definitions of populism; the logic of populism; the populist political style; and the relationship between democracy and populism. Finally, I will examine some explanations for the rise of populism.2021-11-30T15:00:00Z
