Abstract: Oligomers and polymers with cyclic and helical structure were synthesized by taking advantage of cis-conformation of N-substituted aromatic amide bonds. A series of single crystal X-ray analyses revealed that 4-(methylamino)benzoic acid oligomers adopted helical conformation with three monomer units per turn in the crystal. The CD spectra and their theoretical analyses indicated that poly(N-subsritutedp-benzamide)favors similar helical conformation in solution. On the other hand, cyclic molecules with inner cavity were synthesized by condensation of trans-stilbene and diphenylacetylene monomers under polymerization conditions.
