Abstract: To realize successful collaborative learning in distributed environments, smooth communication is important since participants acquire some knowledge through their interaction. However, it is difficult for participants to communicate with others because of the limited ways of communication compared to face-to-face environments. In order to facilitate the opportunity to communication through networks, the concept of awareness plays an important role. This paper proposes a collaborative learning support system in which participants can be aware of their learning situations effectively. The interface corresponds to each participant’s view. In order to enhance the communication among participants, our system facilitates three types of awareness in collaborative learning: (i) awareness of participants, (ii) awareness of utterances, and (iii) awareness of contribution of discussion. This paper introduces these concepts and shows how to implement the three types of awareness in our interface.
