Abstract

Since changes in the North Korean economic system after World War II have not been sufficiently elucidated, this book aims to understand “the changes of the North Korean economic system in the context of the vicissitudes of the socialist bloc on a worldwide scale.” The book’s author sensibly does not take overheated, often extreme argumentation on North Korea’s political system at face value, and his fine analyses of “agriculture” and “special economic zones” stress, how changes became even more apparent after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Though the presentation of the “phases” and “marks” could be too categorical, since no “objective” sources on the North Korean economy currently exist, one must be more or less hypothetical.
